21st Century Cures Initiative Hopes to Speed Up Drug Research and Approval

In addition to debates on federal funding of scientific research, some conversations in Washington D.C. have focused on more efficient ways to make use of that research. Recently Rep. Fred Upton (R-MI) and Rep. Diana DeGette (D-CO) spearheaded an initiative that aims to speed up the process of drug approval. The initiative, nicknamed 21st Century Cures, already has support within the NIH and FDA, and the House began a series of exploratory hearings on May 20.

Upton and DeGette hope to bring in more input from experts across the research community on how to both decrease regulatory burden and increase efficiency, all while maintaining the necessary rigor of the approval process.
